  • Odds of brother w/ TC?

OK, some of you have read my posts on my middle son (now 21) Justin with TC last year...Now my oldest son (25) has been complaining of pain in testicle for a few days, my husband made him an appt with urologist for Monday, but Josh was going out of town over week-end and seemed to be in pain so I figured maybe it was epidydimius (sp) or an infection SO I got him in yesterday to see a Dr. that works with the Dr. that ordered Justin's diagnostic ultrasound....anyway Josh went to see her and she didn't diagnose anything, instead she told him to keep the appt. with the urologist and meanwhile she made him an ultrasound appt. for Tues. ANYWAY-just thought I'd ask opinions and see if anyone knew the odds and ask for prayer on this-THANKS-God Bless all-Lanette ><>
    Son (21) Diag 6/29/05;non-seminoma stage II;embryonal carcinoma & teratoma; right I/O 7/1; 4 X BEP; 21.5 x 19.0 x 9.5cm abdominal mass; full bilateral RPLND 11/21/05; 8-06 right arm/hand continues to heal from paralysis due to nerve injury

The odds are still very low, but according to this page on the TC-Cancer.com site, "Brothers of affected individuals are 8 to 10 times more likely to develop testicular cancer ... when compared with the relatives of men who have never had testicular cancer."

Given an incidence rate of about 11 cases per 100,000 white men in the age range 20 to 54, that would mean the odds for a white male whose brother had testicular cancer would be around 1 in 1,000.

It is indeed very rare. There is a study sponsored by the National Insitute of Health that is examining familial testicular cancer. As some of you know, my situation is similar but even rarer -- my sister had germ cell ovarian cancer, which is essentially the female version of testicular cancer. That kind of ovarian cancer is not the kind that generally affects middle aged women, rather it affects women aged 13-29 generally. She did the 3xBEP a couple of years before I did my 4xEP.

I hope your family does not have to wear the same badge of honor that we wear. One is certainly enough. But if it turns out to be 2, please know that some of us have been there and will provide as much support as we can.

        Best of luck,
        Mitch

Thanks for replies ( & prayers) -I will keep you posted-I do not feel it is TC as it seems different than Justin's symptoms but will feel more assured after Josh sees the urologist Monday-God Bless-Lanette ><>

I know my oncologist told me to make sure my brother took the correct precautions to check for TC,, ie: self exam, seeing his physican on a regular basis,, because brothers are at a higher risk of getting TC. (I cant remember the percentage he told me though).

Thank you Kev332 for reply, Josh is at Urologist appt. right now so I'll try to post his findings this afternoon (it's 11:42 where I am now) my husband went with him (Josh's wife is 8 months pregnant with our "miracle" granddaughter-as they struggled with infertility for 3 years) Praying for wisdom for the Dr. in correct diagnosis as Justin was diagnosed with epidiymius at first-though Josh says he does NOT feel any lump-so that is a good sign-only God knows (literally) what it is for sure so that is why I pray wisdom that Dr. will make correct diagnosis.....Lanette ><>

Good news-the Urologist is fairly certain it is an infection-he prescribed anibiotics BUT he thought to err on the side of caution Josh should go ahead and have the ultrasound tomorrow (we live in a small community about 6,000 and when the urologist saw my husband he said "Oh no not you again!" my husband appreciated his sense of humor)

So glad to hear the good news, and glad the doctor is being cautious just the same!

How did Josh's ultrasound go? I know the doctor's were just being cautious but it's still upsetting.
