  • Is it a mass or is it not a mass

    Hello everyone.

I had a right I/O 6/5/2013. Recovery is going well. Here is where I'm stuck.

My first US pre op showed 6 masses on right and one (4mm) mass on left.
Pre op CT and markers clean/negative.

Concerned about the left mass I had an MRI two days ago. They found nothing and say the testis is normal.

I'm confused and nervous if 1) US was wrong or 2) is MRI was wrong.

    Opinions?!?!
Pain in groin/abdominal for a few months
    Found mass May 22,2013
Ultrasound May 28,2013 (6 masses on right, 1 mass on left)
    Right Radical Orchietomy June 5,2013
    Pure Seminoma 1.7cm and .5cm
    stage Ib
MRI shows left testis clear and normal
    Surveillance

Welcome. I am new to this myself but would want to know what the characteristic of the mass on the left is. Medically, a mass isn't the same thing as tumor; there are other, benign explanations. For example, did the mass appear to be fluid (appears black on u/s) ? That could be a hydrocele or varicocele, neither of which are cancer. Sometimes testicles develop microcalcifications, or microlithiasis (white on u/s). I would call the doc and have them to explain what the mass looks like and how they explain what it is; if they are saying it's not cancer then they should also be able to tell you what it actually is.

Good luck and let us know.

Thanks for the info. As we all know the 'unknown' is such an anxiety causer. I'm getting somewhat mixed signals. I've spoken with 2 Oncologists (one being Dr. Einhorn) and 2 Urologists. All have been SUPER helpful and empathetic. My right testis path was Pure Seminoma stage 1b. The US showed one 3mm mass (speck if you will) and for peace of mind I wanted an MRI. The MRI was compared to the US and a CT scan I had pre op. The Dr that wrote the MRI report said that my left testicle is normal and no mass is seen.

The confusion comes in now because both Urologists said to follow up with another US in a few months. As we are all in the same boat here, I want to know for sure if it's something or not. I hear MRI's can be wrong and I hear US's can be wrong. This is just hard already to deal with and thinking that it might not be over is scary. I guess there is no right or wrong answer. That's the sucky thing about TC, there is no black and white.
