  • Very small lump

    Hello

I have a very small lump on the back of my left testicle. It is pretty hard, but I would say it's only about 2-3 mm across and isn't raised very much. I am going to make a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but was wondering what you guys thought it could be. I have read where cancerous tumors are usually larger and on the sides or front of the testicle. I guess I am just worried and wondering what's going on.

Getting a urologist to check it out will answer the questions. It could be cancer, or it could be something much less serious, such as a cyst. Please let us know what you find out from the doctor.

It's not really possible to tell what the lump is but when it's on the testicle it needs to be taken seriously. The doctor may send you for an ultrasound to help him decide if it's dangerous. It could be lots of things just be ready for a bunch of test to make sure you're ok.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. What are some of the common tests besides the ultrasound?

Just as Dadmo wrote, you are likely to be sent for an ultrasound- which is painless. You may also have blood drawn to measure what is know as tumor markers. Then the doctors (usually your primary, a urologist and a radiologist who write the US report) will decide if you need further treatment.
Try to avoid self exams for now, but make sure you get to see your doctor ASAP.

Don't panic over this comment but the sooner the appointment the better and if you can a urologist is the doctor you want to see.

Ok, I just called the urologist's office. The earliest they can get me in is April 18. Is that too long to wait?

I would call the Urologists office and tell them you are presenting signs of Testicular Cancer, and you are not comfortable waiting that long. Ask them if they know of another urologist that can see you sooner- or ask them if you should go to the ER.
You should be talking to the nurse, not reception. Be persistant, I'm sure they will get your appt moved up.

OK, I got my appointment rescheduled for tomorrow morning, but it's with the physician's assistant. Do you all think this will be just as good, or should I wait until I can see the physician next Wednesday?

As long as the PA can schedule an ultrasound it will be fine. You may have to push a bit to get that done but an ultrasound is really needed to help determine if you have cancer.

I agree with Dadmo, also the PA may be able to get the urologist to look at you if warranted.

Well I went in this morning. He wasn't sure what it was, as it was right at the border of the epidymis and testicle. The PA sent me to have an ultrasound immediately. The radiologist determined it was a spermatocele and sent me back to the urologist. The urologist said he felt the diagnosis was correct, but wanted me to come back in 3 months for another US just in case. So that's where I am at right now. I'm relieved to say the least. Thanks for everyone's help. This is a great site and I admire your work.
