  • Could I be the 1 in 300 person ?

Hey Peoples, It's with fear and concern that I write here, but I am hoping for the best.

To give a small background on myself, not so much as a sob story, but as to why this has me down :-(. Im a 25 year old Male ( obviously ) that is currently living in Canada. I am in the process of training to go over to the UK, and join the British Royal Marine Commandos. My training has been very intense, and is coming along very good to join one of the most professional and elite classes of infantry in the world. And then this...

I noticed in the middle of the night that I had pain in my left testicle. Thinking nothing of it, I went back to bed. I woke up, and felt it slightly, but again, I assumed it would go away. After 3 days of constant ache, and small stabbing pains, I decided to see my family doctor. He gave me a feel test, and said everything feels alright, and there are no lumps, and it could be a urinary infection, or just an inflammed testicle. He also added it is not a hernia. He told me to check back with him within a week if it did not go away, and we would have an ultra sound. It has only been one day since the doctor, however, the pain is still there. To top it off, I am now feeling pain in my lower abdominals. The pain seems to be getting worse and more painful in the testicles as well. Im hoping its not TC, however, whatever it is, it can't be good if the pain has not subsided, and has increased in the 5 days in which it's started. Another weird symptom I have is that it feels like Im wetting myself, when Im not.... would this be what they mean in the symptom when they say the scrotum is filling with liquid ?. There is no problems in urination, and it appears to look fine. I have done the " feel " test myself several times today, feeling very cautious, and have felt nothing unordinary.... perhaps the fact that one testicle seems to hang a bit lower then the other ( this being the troubled one ).

I know no one here can give me any sure answers, however any advice would be welcomed, as you all know more then I do.

If I were you, I'do go back to the doctor for an ultrasound as soon as possible, given that feel test may result in a false negative, and your symptoms have changed since you last saw the doctor. I am not implying that you have TC, of course, but the sooner you have that checked, the better.

There are not many things I can tell you to provide real comfort...a doctor is the only one that can tell you for sure...but I will say a couple of things. TC is very rare, so that is in your favor. Also, you started all this heavy training and started having pains...maybe they are somehow related. Also the doctor did a feel test...and while that is in NO way a replacement for a more detailed exam, he did say that your testicles were fine....another good sign. My husband's doctor felt his testicle and in 2 seconds announced it was cancer. Again, you need to be checked out to be sure, but I would say you have lots of positive indicators that it could be something other than TC. Get the ultrasound done and let us know. Hope it does not create too much anxiety.

Margaret, Marco, and Paul thank you for your replies, and in a timely fashion no less. I will see my doctor within the next few days if the pain does not let go. Im hoping it is not TC as well obviously. I find most people that have TC have found the lump in the testicle even before the pain, so perhaps I am fortunate. To top it all off, this friday Im going for lazer eye surgery, so Im going to be in bed for a few days following that. This is not something I really want on my mind while Im laying there.

My answers for you Paul. This is not a military doctor, he is my family doctor, has been for 17 years. No urine sample was taken. I have no other symptoms besides possible middle / lateral kidney pain. Its also painful right above my penis, in the pelvis area. Also sometimes I feel like I have a discharge from my penis, it feels wet, but there is nothing there. Like I said previous, whether this is the symptom of your scrotum filling with liquid feels like, I am not sure. I have no tenderness in the pecs, and have no back pain. I have taken a few Ibuprofen however, since the doctor did say it COULD be an inflammation.

Thanks for the advice, and all replies are still welcomed !.

          TyGuy,
My husband had general discomfort. Neither he, I, 2 GPs or a urologist ever felt a lump. Sometimes discomfort is the only sign. Only an ultrasound can tell what's going on...please don't delay.

Well Im a blunt guy, and I guess I expect blunt answers. It does not look very re-assuring at the moment. I thought a lump would have to be present to be 100%. *sigh*. I hope it is not what it is, for if it is, my dreams as a Royal Marine are instantly ended. Heres hoping.

              Do a Blood Test

Ask your family doctor to give you a blood test called CBC (Complete Blood Count) and a urine sample test. They will detect if you have an infection. My doctors also thought my pain / swelling was an infection and they ran those 2 tests immediately. The results came back in 1 day - and were clean. And that is when they ran the tests for Testicular Cancer.

I hope you just have an infection.

                TyGuy,
Sorry to be blunt, but a Royal Marine must face challenges head on! There are a lot of things this can be besides TC. Really. But if it is TC you don't want to delay a diagnosis. Some guys here go through months and months of antibiotics for a suspected infection only to find out it was TC all along. Urine cultures are good to have to check for an infection or STD (yes, I continue to be blunt) but an ultrasound cuts to the chase on if there is a mass...solid or fluid-filled as in a cyst or hydrocele. Don't dash any dreams yet.....odds are all is well.

                  TyGuy:

Just wanted to chime in. I had TC twice and at no time could a discrete lump be felt. Both times the tumors were virtually in the center of the testicle.
The only thing I noticed was pain if the testicle was pinched between my legs and a change in consistancy - slightly less spongy near the middle - during a TSE.

                  Get it checked my friend.

Thanks for the information, all of you. Since it feels the same after seeing the doctor for the 2 days, I made another appointment. I have pulled a lot of muscles, and felt a lot of injuries in my life, but nothing like this. It feels although something is actually expanding inside you. If after 7 days, a pain like that does not subside, I agree it must be something serious. My appointment is for tomorrow, and I hope I get the Ultra Sound at that point in time, and finally find out what this is. Cross your fingers for me :-).

Fingers crossed, TyGuy. The ultrasound is a must, and bloodwork for tumor markers is a good idea up front as well. The standard is B-HCG, LDH, and AFP. AFP and betaHCG can give a big clue as to the pathology if there is a solid mass. Again, don't think the worse, it may be something else. So glad you're getting this checked! Please post on how it goes.

Well heres kind of a pointless update. I went to my doctor, however he needs to book an ultra scan appointment for me. It is booked for next Friday. In the meantime he says there are no lumps, and my urination does not hurt, or burn, and is still under the assumption it will pass within a week.

Regardless, I am still scared. To top it off, I go for my lazer eye surgery tomorrow lol. My question is this. Is it OK to have sex with my girlfriend during this time ?. I know it might not be recommended, but what are peoples thoughts on it ?.

I hope I find some answers soon, or it just goes away.
