Did you try to apply for MediCal? California has a pretty generous Medicaid program but, you need to go through the process to apply. Since it is after the fact I'm not sure it would do any good as far as paying current bills but, if you still need follow-up care you'd be covered. Have you talked to any of the social workers at the hospital about this or the patient financial services at the hospital? Have you ever worked? If not you could try to apply for SSI (welfare) which would probably give you MediCal right off the bat. I'd get in touch with a social worker A.S.A.P. and let them know what is going on, they can probably guide you in the right direction.

I'm not a legal expert so take this for what it's worth. The longer you wait, the more likely the chances that the medical community and collection agencies will try to seize or put liens on property, and garnish your wages when you do find work. Not a good way to start a new job.

Filing for protection against creditors (bankruptcy) for medical expenses is an unfortunate consequence of our form of health care coverage. I think I read that the number of medical expense bankruptcies is higher than those from the mortgage fiasco. With some homework and persistence, you could probably file without a lawyer. Or you might find an organization that does this pro bono or for a small fee.

I have heard of people filing for medical bankruptsy, I know it doesn't hurt your credit as much as standard bankruptsy.

hello, its been awhile since i been on here and since then i haven't had health insurance and my bills already went to collection. im only 22 years old with no income at all.
