  • Acor (tcrc) Needs Your Help!

From Gilles Frydman, founder of ACOR.org:

    ACOR urgently needs your help!

A technical catastrophe has caused a financial crisis. See further details below. In the meantime....

    TO MAKE A DONATION:

    1. Online:
    Go to http://tinyurl.com/32fcc4
This will bring you to Network for Good

    2. By Mail:
    ACOR
    173 Duane St
    Suite #3B
    New York NY 10013-3334

    ACOR EIN: 13-3918116

(Note: Large donations should be given by check, not credit card. Network for Good will take 3% of the donation AND will probably take 3-4 weeks before sending the money to ACOR)

    WHAT IS THE URGENCY?
    -------------------------------------

On January 17, 2007, due to a catastrophic failure, ACOR lost its main disk array, a supposedly fail-safe SUN T3. As a result, it looked for a while that all the conversations done on ACOR over the last 11 years had been destroyed. Fortunately it looks like we may be able to recover about 80% of them.

The failed equipment, acquired 4 years ago, was designed to help us recover data in case we lost one of the hard drives but failed miserably. We need to replace that very expensive piece of equipment with a more reliable system. We have been looking for solutions, including buying refurbished units.

We are brainstorming about how we can replace it....thinking how to better protect the data we have and maximize future availability of all the websites, including the hosted ones and the various research-oriented sites we
    maintain.

The main problem is cost. We need to find $30,000 urgently to replace the failed equipment.

As you all know, ACOR is a nonprofit organization which has been providing exceptionally reliable free service for more than 11 years. We remain one of the very few sites not selling advertising. We are supported by donations from listmembers and foundations. So we are currently sending out a call to all of the people who belong to all of the ACOR lists to help us over this unexpected technical and financial crisis.

For those interested in the technical details:

We are currently looking at acquiring 2 refurbished small EMC2 Clariion arrays (see http://tinyurl.com/2sgf7c) that will work in conjunction with the ACOR main server, a Sun Enterprise 10000, see http://images.acor.org/e10k/ that has been providing unmatched speed, flexibility and reliability for the last 3 years.

It should be noted that one of the ACOR volunteers is an EMC expert and will be able to maintain and maximize the arrays once they are installed and mirrored.

All the ACOR volunteers thank you in advance for your help. With it we will provide even more reliable service for the years to come.
