  • "What helped me get through" survey

Ronald Bye, one of our fellow LIVESTRONG Day delegates, sent out the message attached below regarding a survivorship survey being compiled by a physician at Harvard Medical School. If you have a chance, check out the survey (it is long, so only do it if you have plenty of spare time).

    Ronald Bye's Message:

I recently came across a Doctor at Harvard Medical school who is in the process of writing a book based on surveys and interviews with cancer survivors and specifically what helped each of us endure the emotional and physical hell which is cancer and cancer treatment. I personally submitted a survey of my thoughts and experiences and she has told me she has already incorporated some of my comments into her book. It seems to me, the more of us that contribute the better the book becomes and I also believe this is a subject which has not been evaluated or documented and really needs to be studied??

You can see her study and information at www.whathelpedgetmethrough.org.

    The book is out!

I had posted this item almost 18 months ago (see previous post). Julie Silver, who is a doc at DFCI, had been researching survivorship at its core. As a cancer doc and a survivor herself, she conducted extensive interviews with cancer survivors from all walks of life. She compiled them into a book called What Helped Get Me Through, which was published a few months ago by the American Cancer Society. It is a great compendium of anecdotes by actual survivors. Julie is a great oncologist, and she accurately recognized that survivorship --what we all have to deal with after being done with treatment-- is almost as tough as dealing with the treatment. Her sources are actual survivors, and the input there is quite useful.

The American Cancer Society is selling the book on their website, and they are offering a discount off their list price for books purchased before December 31. To get it, check out www.cancer.org/books4USYN.
