    Scott,

Sorry to bring up such a stupid and senseless issue. I have a real problem quiting the cigerettes. I know that I am at increased risk for lung cancer, and should quit this killer habit, but they have this hold on me. I was thinking of a support group for us stupid people to help each other with kicking this habit and maybe share some methods that work. I know there has got to be more than just myself that has this problem. I have gone from 1-1/2 packs a day to less that 1/2 pack a day, back to a pack a day, and so on, but cant seem to just quit. Maybe a forum for us to just share experiences and resources to look into for help. Just a thought. Thanks

Larry, it's not stupid and senseless at all. Good for you! I'd suggest you try an existing forum such as QuitNet.

I used to smoke 30 a day, I have quit smoking rather easily, my trick is:
1st you must make a quit date about 4 weeks ahead of making it, stick to it and dont change it forward or back.
go out and buy omega 3 fish oil, take 1 with food to see if you have any adverse reactions(some people get sick). If you are ok with it, take 3 a day for the 1st week, then 4 for acouple days, and move upto 6 and as high as you can go without suffering brain fog(for me this was 7 a day). You will soon realise cigarettes dont give you the same buzz anymore but you will feel much better overall. come your quit day, start on patches and take them off before bed so you dont get vivid dreams. Keep taking the fish oil at max dosage (would most likely be 5-7 capsules).
Fish oil is more a food then anything else besides a suppliment, the worst that can happen is you get sick for a day or break out in a rash, if this happens you can skip the dosage the following day and start on a lower dosage from then on. You must complete the full course of the patches and continue taking fish oil until your patch course has finished.

My trick was to work at a place where we don't have the right to smoke. With this way you only smoke when you go out of the building(probably 3 or 4 times a day). When i decided to really quit i have stopped dramatically from 4 to 0 with almost no problem. It's easy when you keep something in your mouth like cinamon stick or chewing gum during one week or 2. Thing to avoid during 2 weeks is beer, because with beer cigarette smell very good. Today i am at the point that i can't support the smell of cigarette.

                  Larry,
Good for you for wanting to quit so badly. I held the hand of my Dad, my hero, as he died from lung cancer. You were stronger than cancer you can be stronger than a cigarette. Good luck...I'm pulling for you !

Fish oil has a big effect on the brain, I know it regulates neurotransmitters. I am suspecting it some how keeps everything in balance and stops the dopamine rush of nicotine.
I know your the skeptical type, if you look up reports on google you will see it has a big effect on regulating neurotransmitters.
Almost everyone I have recomended it to says it has improved there general wellbeing, what I found with myself was if I took a lot of it it would somehow numb the effects of the nicotine wich prompted me to try quit smoking, it helps with self control and concerntration wich is why fish oil is also used in ADHD as a natural alternative.

I think I'm pretty open-minded. There are some areas in which I can go on faith, but on health issues, I like to see evidence.

                        Suggestions

                        Larry,

Good to hear from you! We're both on the same TC surveillance schedule and I think we're both in good shape.

Regarding cigarettes, I watched my mom--the sweetest lady in the world--deteriorate and die because of 60 years of frantic smoking. Cigarettes controlled every aspect of her life. It was really sad, and convinced me to never even try a cigarette. My dad quit cold turkey after release of the 1964 Surgeon General's report, which I consider a colossal achievement.

You have probably already thought of this, but your employer probably has free smoking cessation programs, so that may be worth a try.

If you've tried everything, there may be another option. Although I've trusted Western medicine all my life (it stomped out my cancer), a friend of mine is a homeopathic physician and an acupuncturist, so that might be worth looking into. He told me that he's successfully helped quite a few people to quit smoking. I'm not actively endorsing that approach, but if it works, what the heck.

Good luck and everyone here is pulling for you!

Another thing that would help a lot is a strong B complex vitamin, There are generally 2 types "balanced formula" or "high potency", you would want the high potency one, taken in the morning, never at night(can cause insomnia or vivid dreams).

B vitamins are calming and energising at the same time, they help reduce mood swings, fatigue and stress, its pretty much the mood swings and stress that make quiting smoking hard, between the fish oil and the vitamin B, it would be a massive benefit.

Also, regarding fish oil dosage, dont jump by more then 2 capsules in less then say.. 4 days, what I have found personally is if I take too much I can get slightly heavy chested(this feeling is hard to describe), this shouldnt be of any major concern and is instantly fixed by eating omega-6 rich foods such as something fried, like chips.

A real quick and easy way to quit is Cold Laser Therapy. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and is painless. I know of 20+ people that have had this done and none of them have gone back to smoking. The best thing is there are no side effects or withdrawl symptoms. I beleive it cost between $250.00 and 350.00 depending on who does it and where you have it done... Best of Luck!!!

Thanks everyone. I have done research on the fish oil. I still have not come across any benifits or matches to it helping quiting the smoking habit, but I am going to try it anyhow. I did come across this http://www.omega3fishoil.org/fish_oi...tion.asp?id=57 and many other ones refering to the benifits of it, mainly to heart, and lung health. I have made an appointment with my GP and I am going to ask him about all this, and what he suggest. I am very commited to quiting, and I have another co-worker that is going to do this with me. For all of you other smokers that want to quit, maybe we can try this together.
