Hey Fish: Just catching up on threads and I was particularly happy to see your recent post on Kathy and her brother. Great news...still keeping positive thoughts that these next few weeks will go smoothly for their recovery.

Wow, if anything can create a strong bond between a pair, this would certainly do it. I think siblings usually have a strong, unspoken bond anyway.
It's just amazing to me that things like this can be done, even though I know it's been done for a long time.
What a beautiful thing!

What a wonderful thing! One of the pastor's at our church donated a kidney to his sister-in-law several years back. They took his kidney out laparoscopicly as well. She is doing great now. She also had a pancrease transplant and it cured her of her life long diabetes.
It is ironic though, we were just talking yesterday about her surgery and the pastors, they both can relate quite a bit to what my husband is going to be doing soon. It is nice to have someone who can relate.
I hope your friends both continue to do well and get to move on to a new and healthier life!
Becki

Friday night, while we were on our way to Pittsburgh, Kathy called to tell me that things went well. She and her brother are both home - tired, but doing OK. They were able to remove her kidney laproscopically, which I think is amazing. She and her brother were a perfect match MHC-wise, but he will still start out on various anti-rejection meds, which will hopefully be tapered off over the course of the first year. Right now, he's taking 25 pills/day!
I want to thank you all again for the good wishes and kind words.

Thanks Maria!
I'm still waiting to hear. Kathy told me she would call me as soon as she was able. Unfortunately, her husband won't help her out at all (long story), so he can't be bothered to call anyone with an update and doesn't answer the phone.
She did tell me before the surgery that there was a slight anatomical complication in that she has 3 renal arteries and 3 renal veins as opposed to the more normal 1 of each, so that was going to increase the complexity of the implantation in her brother.
I appreciate everyone's positive energy and I'll post as soon as I hear anything.

Fish...sorry about the postponement, but that just means extended well-wishes for Kathy from our neck of the woods.

Here we go again
I just got a note from my friend that the surgery was postponed until Friday
Apparently livers trump kidneys, and a liver became available for another patient. I can understand the necessity-- get a liver, do the surgery immediately, but it's certainly frustrating for all concerned.
Thanks again for all the good thoughts, and I will let you know what happens.
