Hello, all. I've been browsing and finally decided to register. I feel like I've found an extended family.
No, that's not a typo. I'm 54. I got the initial diagnosis on my 25th wedding anniversary, and the I/O on the day we were supposed to leave on a second big honeymoon in Hawaii. We had just renewed our AARP memberships for the discounts!
I am now 5 weeks post-op and awaiting the first round of surveillance. Seminoma 1, no sign of spread based on pathology, blood, CT's, Xrays, etc.. I have two sons, 19 and 15, who now know everything about self-exam.
I'll give more background and figure out how to set up my profile, but first I need to say two things.
First, I have the deepest admiration and respect for the caregivers. With kids of my own in the target age, I have some inkling of the anxiety and sacrifices the parents must have endured. Close on their heals for most highly admired are the wives, fiances, and girl-friends, without whom us guys would be in a real mess. Too many people run away from problems like these, or less so. You have a special capacity for love, for sure. All caregivers have a reserved place in heaven, and if God is still minting arch-angels, the jobs are yours for the asking.
Second, and this is the only politicking I intend to voice, I would like to shake some sense into Congress and our esteemed President about children's healthcare. Depriving a single child of premier healthcare in this great country is a crime, a sin, and an embarrassment. We shouldn't be in Iraq; too many people are dying there and here. Keep the money right here.
I'd like to hear your feedback. TC is rare, and at my age, a total lightning strike. I was scared to the point of preparing my family for my death during that 3-week window of unknowns, but I do feel incredibly lucky we got this early. Are there enough "old-timers" around to keep a special forum going?
