  • New Member Survivor With A 54 Year Old Perspective

Hello, all. I've been browsing and finally decided to register. I feel like I've found an extended family.

No, that's not a typo. I'm 54. I got the initial diagnosis on my 25th wedding anniversary, and the I/O on the day we were supposed to leave on a second big honeymoon in Hawaii. We had just renewed our AARP memberships for the discounts!

I am now 5 weeks post-op and awaiting the first round of surveillance. Seminoma 1, no sign of spread based on pathology, blood, CT's, Xrays, etc.. I have two sons, 19 and 15, who now know everything about self-exam.

I'll give more background and figure out how to set up my profile, but first I need to say two things.

First, I have the deepest admiration and respect for the caregivers. With kids of my own in the target age, I have some inkling of the anxiety and sacrifices the parents must have endured. Close on their heals for most highly admired are the wives, fiances, and girl-friends, without whom us guys would be in a real mess. Too many people run away from problems like these, or less so. You have a special capacity for love, for sure. All caregivers have a reserved place in heaven, and if God is still minting arch-angels, the jobs are yours for the asking.

Second, and this is the only politicking I intend to voice, I would like to shake some sense into Congress and our esteemed President about children's healthcare. Depriving a single child of premier healthcare in this great country is a crime, a sin, and an embarrassment. We shouldn't be in Iraq; too many people are dying there and here. Keep the money right here.

I'd like to hear your feedback. TC is rare, and at my age, a total lightning strike. I was scared to the point of preparing my family for my death during that 3-week window of unknowns, but I do feel incredibly lucky we got this early. Are there enough "old-timers" around to keep a special forum going?

    Best regards,
    Paul

    Paul:
Welcome to the forum and thaks fo becoming an active participant. 54? Holy smokes you're certainly on the fringe of the bell curve for getting tc. What were your symptoms? I guess my big shock is that you caught it at stage I. Most guys our age would put off an exam way beyond stage I. I do have just one more question, does your AARP allow discounts at the sperm bank.

Hey Paul: I am so sorry to welcome you to the club, but so happy you found it! Young or old, rich or poor, handsome or "he's got a nice personality" - cancer is a very undiscriminating club...if it wants you, it'll take you on its forced membership!!!

As a caregiver and a wife, I thank you for your kind words of appreciation for the different kind of struggle we go through to support our boys...I wish you continued success on your recovery.

Welcome Paul! Sorry you've joined the club but am I glad you did. I was diagnosed this past August and I am 44! It is unusual for someone my age to get it this late, but you my friend, took the cake! Nevertheless, it is great to have you here. Perhaps you and I can start a "TC Council of Elders" . All kidding aside, you've come to the right place and you will soon find that these guys and (caregiving) gals have a LOT to offer! Welcome again!

And just to think they thought my husband, at 37, was too old for TC....I guess we are learning lots and lots about this cancer.

You have a great outlook and I am glad you found us. Welcome from the bottom of my heart.

"TC Council of Elders" that's troublesome not because it's wrong but how do we get the word out to the older general population. Everything you hear or read talks about this being a young man's disease. Perhaps it's time for us to come up with an awareness campaign for the older guy's. Maybe something like "Testicular Cancer if you got em check em".

Yep, TC happens to oldsters too. I was 48, and everyone was surprised because I was so old. But, my family doctor reported to me that he had diagnosed another case just 6 months after mine, and that guy was just about my age too. So, there is a point about reminding older gentlemen to check their equipment - most of my friends and co-workers around my age that I told have said they never check - hopefully they do now.

I can't speak to moodiness before diagnosis, as I don't think I had any more of that usuall in the months leading up to my diagnosis, but I did in the months following. I think these may have been inpart from hormone level swings as my remaining one geared up to do the work of two, but probably just as much as my need to mentally and emotionally work through just what it all meant in my life - the fact I could no longer consider myself bullet-proof, trying not to worry about every ache and pain, as well as some level of guilt for being so fortunate when others are not.

But, welcome to the Forum, Paul. Glad you got a favorable pathology report and have such a good attitude.

Welcome Paul! My hubby was 46 at diagnosis. I'm one town away from Basking Ridge-Sloan, but it opened after we needed it. I do believe you'd be in NYC for a consult though. From the little I know about BR, it's more of an outpatient treatment and diagnostic facility.

                        Welcome Young Man

I am 58 and I just had a Bilateral I/O two days ago. The Doctor is still in disbelief and wants to review the path reports. I do have a history of Sarcoidosis that also invades the testicals, and being caucasion of Irish decent I am not suppose to have that either!

You will find everyone here very supportative and helpful. They are a good goup of warm hearted people. They will answer the craziest questions.

Hi Paul. Sorry to have to welcome you to this group but what a great group to find! These are some truly giving and devoted people with tons of useful information and great ears!

And what a nice comment about us gals on the other side of the hospital bed. Nights like tonight when I am setting on the couch and feel great and know he feels like crap (and I am feeling guilty for my good health) its nice to hear that all is not lost and we are apreciated. Gives me a boost to try and help him to feel as well as he can feel, even on bad days.
