  • 5 years post Chemo, have questions

Hello all, I have been browsing around here for quite a while and decided I needed to post.

    History/Introduction:
Male, 28 years old and had the "grand operation" to remove "Mr. Righty" on Oct 19, 2001 and underwent 3 cycles of BEP. Had all types of fun things go wrong during the chemo, allergic reactions, PE's, ect..... ANYWAY, now 5 years later I am happily married (to the same girl that stood by my side the entire time) and we will celebrate our one year anniversary June 2! Have always been physically active, did my first century last year (Clarksville Century in TN, if anyone knows about that one) caver, ice climber, cyclist, shooting sports - if its outdoors I probably like it. Located in NW GA. That about covers everything I guess

Now to my question: This might have been better placed in the Testosterone section BUT, this section gets a lot of traffic. It seems like in the last 6-12 months my energy levels are slowly dropping, along with my libido and my weight is steadily increasing. I am always tired and never get enough sleep. My job and wife are starting to suffer from my lack of energy. I had a Dr. apt yesterday after my wife (a BSN) noticed my thyroid being swollen at the dinner table (from across the table ). Well, in short order I had an apt with my oncologist. By that time it was no longer visibly swollen. I go on Wednesday to get an ultra sound of my thyroid and back to my Dr to get the results. He said it may be a little swollen, but it felt nice, smooth and symmetrical (read: don't worry about it). So I am not gonna sweat it. What I am starting to wonder about is my testosterone levels. I just placed a call into my Dr. asking about T levels and what he thought. Waiting on a call back right now. I have the highest levels of confidence in my Dr. and really respect is call on things. Anyone have any additional input?

So has anyone noticed that several years (5 to be exact) post chemo that their T levels drop? Thyroid goes crazy? Most of what I have been reading shows it starts right after chemo, not 5 years down the road.

If I have left out any details that may be pertinent for you to form an opinion let me know.

    Thanks,
    Jason

An endocrinologist may be the best person to check your testosterone levels, but I'd say it's quite possible after testicular cancer, regradless of whether you had chemo.

I'm on Testim and it works pretty well for me. It's only a small hassle to apply the gel every day. I feel fine, although my libido is not quite what it was before the cancer.

Thanks, an endocrinologist was my next stop.

Talked to one of the nurses and she is adding a testosterone level test to the blood I had drawn yesterday. I shall know next Tuesday (or at least have a good idea) what is going on!!

So when you rub the cream on is it sticky? runny? dry like paste? From all that I have read the cream looks to be the best option for low T levels.

Testim and Androgel, probably most commonly used testosterone replacements now, are clear gels. It's slightly sticky and can run a little bit. You squeeze it into your hands and rub it on your shoulders, usually in the morning after bathing.

Some say it remains sticky on their skin after it dries, but it's not supposed to, and it doesn't on me.

Headed to the Dr. office in about two hours for most of the results of my tests. I got the nurse to fax my T level results to me a little while ago........ 257 for a 28 year old male.

I will start a new thread in the testosterone section.
