Neuropathy with BEP 4 cycles question.

    Neuropathy with BEP 4 cycles question.

    I had 4 cycles of BEP to eliminate a big mediastinal seminoma tumor. Now is gone, I finish chemo con FEB 23, 2006. PET says I'm clean. I'm in the 3 er month 2 weeks of being out of chemo.

    My question is ... I suffering of neuropathy on my hands and on feets up to knees, my joints are in pain too. I read on the web that this are temporaly symphoms, is this true?.. they say they will be gone in 18 months +/-. So I will like to know if this will happen.

    1.- It will be less or will increase even more with time?
    2.- Does Lyrica helps?
    3.- Which is the % of patients who get rid of neuropathy with 4 cyles of BEP ?
    4.- Besides Vitamin B ( GNC , B-complex and injected) what else can help?
    5.- I have my to little friends with me, however I feel that my libido has
    decrese a little bit with chemo.. .is this normal?

    I'm 29 years old.
    Very atlethic before this thing happens, I have being inactive in sports for more than 1 year.

    Welcome to the forum. I just did some quick research on your type of cancer and it's certainly one of the less common types. Read the report here. As far as libedo, that should return to normal, just give it some time, it will take a few more weeks to flush the chemo out of your system. The neuropathy can be a serious problem. For most people the symptos fade with time but the can be debilitating. Have you spoken to your doctor about this problem?

      Thanks for the research, I have read so much about my sickness that I can give classes to my Doc.

      I'm very optimist and my faith is 100% in GOD that this thing will never come back, and if it happens I will fight again and again... my soul is in GOD's hands.

      Back to neuropathy , I would like to think that his article is true ( see link) My Doc told me to take Lyrica, I haven´t I will like to keep my body out of drugs and take it just when is very, very, very necessary.

      Is this is correct. I'm 100 % sure my neuropathy will be gone.

        Other with first hand knowledge can help you with this question but to start you of you may want to read the thread located here.

          Neuropathy effects everyone differently.. Some only have it for a few months and some have it for a few years.... Lyrica does work--After taking Lyrica for a few months I would say my condition improved 30%-- I went from not being able to walk or stand for more then 2 minutes to being able to walk and stand for 20 minutes.. I still tire fast and after walking for 15 minutes I'm done for a few moments.. I read the article you posted .. about 60%of patients will fully recover... 30 % will recover 40-60% and about 10% of patients will never recover... Cisplatin damage will usually fully recover with-in 2 years.... The lyrica really does work and only causes slight lightheadedness occcasionally... Best of Luck to you!!!!!!!!!! DON

            Sergio,

            My understanding is that neuropathy goes away in many cases, but not necessarily in all cases. From what I have read, sometimes it can take years to go away, so I think you have good reason to hope for the best since you are only a few months after chemo. I have also read that it usually peaks at around six months after chemo, then it starts to subside after that.

            Regarding supplements to help relieve neuropathy, my oncologist said that I can try taking Vitamin E (400 IU per day) and Vitamin B6 (150 mg per day). I believe she said that research has not yet proven that these vitamins help, but that many doctors and patients believe they do help.

            By the way, I finished 3xBEP about two weeks ago and I have some mild neuropathy in my fingers.

              TSX.- 3 cycles won't make you too much neuropathy pain,,, good luck !

                1. Three months out?...it should start to decrease. Nerves grow back at a rate of about 1/4 inch a month, so be patient.

                2. I have been taking Lyrica (50mg twice a day) for 7 months. At first I didn't think it was working. It takes a while (several weeks) to start working. Then about three months after I started the medications, I ran out one day. I went about 48 hours without Lyrica and my symptoms flared up big time. Lyrica seems to keep the symptoms down.

                My doctor gave me Lidoderm (Lidocaine patch 5%). It's a stick-on patch for pain. I tried it on my feet and it didn't do a thing. I wouldn't bother with the patches.

                BTW-The tingling wasn't that bad. However, we went to Hawaii four months after chemo. I took my shoes off and walked on the beach. It felt like I was walking on broken glass. Total sensory overload. However, I can't feel it when the doctor touches my feet. He told me it's because the different sensations are from different nerves.

                5. Low libido is normal. I'm 9 months post chemo and it is coming back slowly. Don't worry about it.

                Just think of it this way....sure you have some side-effects, maybe permanent, but you're alive! I think it's a fair deal.

                Pulmonary Embolism (Almost died)
                Extremely low red blood count (Required 4 blood transfusion)

                Status
                In remission since August 2005
                July 2011-tumor markers clean!
