Hello everyone! I am new to this board. My husband was diagonised with TC in Aug. of 2004. He had the left Testie removed and went through 3 rounds of Chemo. He was given a clean bill of health in Nov of 2004. After his surgery they did a sperm count on him and told us he had a very low count. The fertility center said it was so low it would be a waste of money to bank. We decided to not bank at the time, although we regret it now. His doctors told us that about 2 years after remission most men get their sprem back and to do a sperm count around that time. Well, after of a year and a half of trying we decided it was time to do a sperm count. He has not had it yet, as we are still waiting to hear back from the doctors about when and where to have it done. Have any of gone through this? We would LOVE to have another little one running around our home and to make our family feel complete. Our daughter was 18months old when my husband Eric was diagonised. He was also diagonised at the age of 28. My name is Jillian and we live in Chattanooga, Tn. I am not even sure I posted this on the right forum, but any help would be very helpful.

You posted it in the right place. As for you question there are a few people on this board that will be able to help with your question. I am just 3 months out so my testing window is now back open since the URO told me it take 3 months for the sperm to get to their ready position
(3 generations of sperm).

The bank that my son went to suggested having a sperm count done one year after chemo. With 18 months under you belt (poor choice of words) your husband should be good to go for a sperm count. Also congratulations on beating cancer.Son Jason diagnosed 4/30/04, stage III. Right I/O 4/30/04. Graduated College 5/13/04. 4XEP 6/7/04 - 8/13/04. Full open RPLND 10/13/04. All Clear since.

My wife became pregnant a year after I finished chemo. We have a wonderful, healthy daughter.
We are having a second baby in November, so she was concieved 3 1/2 years after chemo.
JSRight side orchiectomy, March 2001, 4.5 cm tumor with probable vascular invasion. Chose surveillance.
9.5 cm groinal lymph node tumor found in Dec. 2001
Finished chemo (cisplatin/etopicide) in March 2002.
Two healthy daughters born naturally after chemo, one in January 2004, another in November 2006.
Continued remission to presentComment

I don't know if this will help but I just banked "good sperm" with one testicle that had cancer in it after I did the chemo from the first battle. I was told that I had very little chance at saving anything b/c of the cancer and chemo, but I did and got to make two deposits which they split into several different vials for later use. I know all situations are different, but if I could get some saved in my messed up condition, I don't see why your hubby won't be able to have some good ones to put on ice. Thanks for the response. He has already undergone this surgery and Chemo. It is almost the 2 year mark post op and treatment. So it is way to late to bank.

Both our babies are natural...
It may be too much information, but here is my story.
When I was told that I needed chemo I had been married 10 years, and my wife and I had just adopted a daughter. When offered the chance to sperm bank I said "No, we have the daughter we want and my wife has had a hysterectomy and can't bear children anyways.
So then, halfway through chemo, my wife filed for divorce and left me. She couldn't handle the idea of being married to a man who was so ill.
When I was all done with chemo, and officially divorced I met my new wife -- a younger woman -- on Yahoo. I told her to expect that I would be sterile, and in fact a sperm count a few months after chemo showed that I was. She was OK with that and we married, ready to raise my adopted daughter and let her be our family.
She became pregnant almost immediately, and our daughter is now 2 1/2. We got pregnant again, had an early miscarriage, and then became pregnant again with another daughter -- she looks great in the sonograms -- due in November.
I am sore today from the vasectomy I had last week to make sure that my apparently very fertile remaining testicle doesn't get me into any more trouble.
At any rate, that is more than you needed to know, but the bottom line is that chemo sure didn't kill my fertility.

What surgery are you talking about? I had ALL the regular surgeries and was able to bank five years post-op and chemo. My doc said that the sperm is back to normal 3 years after chemo, so maybe you may have to wait a little bit. Please excuse me if I have misunderstood, but let me know about the surgery you spoke of above. Thanks, JoeTC 1

When we spoke to the sperm bank clinic (out of Altanta) they only talked about possibly banking sperm before Eric went through treatment. Not once was it ever mentioned about banking after treatment. The surgery I am talking about is when they removed the cancerous Testie. Eric did not have to have his lympth nodes removed at all. He went through 3 rounds of Chemo. (vp-16(vepesid), Cisplatin, and Bleomycin). Before he started his Chemo they did do a sperm count on him (it was also a week after his surgery) and they said his sperm count was very low. His urologist said it could be from several things. The surgery, Stress of cancer, or the actual cancer itself. Since the sperm bank said we would basically be wasting money to bank we decided not to. Although we regret it now. He started his chemo and finished and has been in remission for almost 2 years. We have not did anymore sperm counts since the one he did before he started Chemo.

Well, i was to the sperm bank before i get into chemo but listen... it was hilarious!
I had to make 4 counts because after the surgery its natural that you may not have many sperm ...man, i was sick of it!
Everytime i was there they always said "that is not enough" "you have to come back tomorrow to do it again"...it was hard to overcome but...now i laugh on it!
