  • Alternate treatments, during surv, after treatment

I was going to start this thread on vitamin b17 and vitamin C injections but as I searched the web I found just as many articles saying there was lack of evidance as there was evidance, there also seems much more better alternate treatments.

I am not trying to promote a silver bullet or saying these work, I have started this thread simply to discuss these matters in a constructive way, I know if I didnt believe in alternative medicine then I would be frustrated at hearing people talking about this stuff, so I have started this thread to keep it out of other threads.

Off the topic of cancer, what 1st got me believing in alternative medicine was fish oil wich has recieved nothing but positive press for many reasons, but doctors never mention it, so it doesnt shock me to see there negative reactions to this treatment.

In conclusion there are about 350 alternate treatments for cancer, taken from a site I wont list because it stupidly claims they all work.

I encourage thoughtful discussion of holistic care, and healthy skepticism of unproven miracle prevention and cure.

      Michael:
I have no problem with a reasoned discussion about alternative medicine or the taking of supplements (I take 14 supplements each day). I do believe that some people can worry themselves sick and that it is possible for some people to progress better during treatment because they have a great attitude. I just don’t want anyone to confuse beliefs with hard scientific fact. Let’s just be careful with this thread.
To start this off when Jason was getting chemo he was given prescription strength potassium and off the shelf magnesium as a preventive for the effect of the chemo. For those who aren’t aware the cisplatin leaches those essential minerals from your muscles so they should be taken to protect your heart.

Eating healthy foods full of vitamins is good. Eating fish (while being cautious about mercury) is good.

Here is a Pro IV vitamin C article, it is published by a medical journel.
Early clinical studies showed that high-dose vitamin C, given by intravenous and oral routes, may improve symptoms and prolong life in patients with terminal cancer. Double-blind placebo-controlled studies of oral vitamin C therapy showed no benefit. Recent evidence shows that oral administration of the maximum tolerated dose of vitamin C (18 g/d) produces peak plasma concentrations of only 220 μmol/L, whereas intravenous administration of the same dose produces plasma concentrations about 25-fold higher. Larger doses (50–100 g) given intravenously may result in plasma concentrations of about 14 000 μmol/L. At concentrations above 1000 μmol/L, vitamin C is toxic to some cancer cells but not to normal cells in vitro. We found 3 well-documented cases of advanced cancers, confirmed by histopathologic review, where patients had unexpectedly long survival times after receiving high-dose intravenous vitamin C therapy. We examined clinical details of each case in accordance with National Cancer Institute (NCI) Best Case Series guidelines. Tumour pathology was verified by pathologists at the NCI who were unaware of diagnosis or treatment. In light of recent clinical pharmacokinetic findings and in vitro evidence of anti-tumour mechanisms, these case reports indicate that the role of high-dose intravenous vitamin C therapy in cancer treatment should be reassessed.

Here is an interesting article, dont know about its credibility though

            Hi,
It is odd that the conservative medical profession has had such minimal exposure to "alternative" medicine. I have worked as a nurse for a long time now and "good nutrition" and the value of supplements have always been high on my list. Both of the doctors that we saw gave a very logical approach to my question about supplements. "The traditional treatment for testicular cancer is very successful, so be careful not to rock the boat." Chemotherapy is based a lot on free radical scavengers. This made sense to me so we hit a very strong middle of the road approach. Healthy healthy eating and a complete, but not exagerated approach to supplements. I still spend part of each day reading and learning. We will consult with an MD specialist to review allergies to food etc. and as well long term dietary plan to decrease toxicity and improve immunity. (Low grade food allergies can slowly tax the body into illness) For me....my car will not run on water, neither will our bodies. It makes sense to be to become educated about it. I used to think that we ate pretty healthy...as I update....plenty of room for improvement. Take care, Russell's mom, Sharon
PS I agree with countering some of the toxic chemicals with good, not exagerated supplementation.

If any article is going to kick up a stink its this one, but I am posting it cause its interesting, believe it or not.
Chemical Hormesis In a series of articles, BEL Newsletter Vol. 6 , No. 2, Vol 6 , No. 3, and Vol. 7 , No. 1, published by the Northeast Regional Environmental Public Health Center, School of Public Health, University of Massachusetts,

Vitamin C is a toxin at high doses - to cancer cells and to normal cells. At lower doses, however, it apparently has a hormetic effect -suppressing cancer incidence, but stimulating its growth rate after cancer becomes a part of the organism

It is indeed interesting. Here is a link to more information about BELLE which the article discusses. I checked the members of the Advisory Committee and they certainly are credible. These are the type of reasoned articles that I don’t think anyone will have a problem with.

Kevin used a lot of alternative therapy stuff. But he researched EVERYTHING before taking any supplements, etc. He's an engineer from South Dakota so he really made sure what he was doing.

We were lucky because there is well known oncologist living in Boulder, CO. We met with him a couple of times because he understood the western med stuff (ie chemo, etc) and he also specialized in Eastern/Alternative medicine. It was great because we could go to one person who understood everything Kevin was taken and could recommend what to do, what not to do, etc.

I defiantely believe in alternative medicines but you just have to really research it.

                    Bad plumbing?

                    From healingdaily.com:

Bowel movements are the basis of your health. If you don't have at least 1 bowel movement per day, you are already walking your way toward disease. Man's body has not changed very much in the past several thousand years... however man's diet has certainly changed a lot. All the refined sugar, white flour, hormone/antibiotics-filled meats we constantly ingest constitute an assault on our bodies. We are continuously violating our bodies by eating terrible foods. Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

So, all congestion and toxins must be removed, and it must begin with cleansing of the bowel.

One of the most frequent bowel problems that people experience today is constipation.

A constipated system is one in which the transition time of toxic wastes is slow. The longer the "transit time," the longer the toxic waste matter sits in our bowel, which allows them to putrefy, ferment and possibly be reabsorbed. The longer your body is exposed to putrefying food in your intestines, the greater the risk of developing disease. Even with one bowel movement per day, you will still have at least three meals worth of waste matter putrefying in your colon at all times.

Disease usually begins with a toxic bowel. Those having fewer bowel movements are harboring a potentially fertile breeding ground for serious diseases. Infrequent or poor quality bowel movements over an extended period of time may be very hazardous to your health.

I am not eally sure of all but i can say that meditation with yoga did help me to get to a better health situation. I am not sure it can really cure but i am sure that it can help in the treatment.
The silva method also can be of a nice help to the cancer treatment.
