  • Thank you all for your help!

I am very grateful to all of you on this site for the wonderful support and great advice you provided me over the last two months.

After 33 years I was diagnosed with my second TC. Honestly I was stunned.

After my surgery, I was presented with a High AFP count, nodules in my lungs, a surgeon who wanted to immediately schedule an RPLND, and in general, a rather dismal outlook.

My wife actually found this site. She began following up, and emailed Scott about my situation. Reading Scott’s message woke me up. I posted on this site, and very quickly received replies from Scott, Dadmo, Iowabrian, and many others of you. Thanks to you guys, I changed from the powerless victim to the take charge person I had become after my first round with TC.

You sent me a list of TC Specialists, I immediately scheduled a second opinion with Dr David Vaughn, at U of Pa. I reached out to Livestrong, I received Dr Lawrence Einhorn at Indiana University, I took the trip.

Based on their examination, testing and analysis, instead of recovering from an operation, I’m considered a good candidate for surveillance. I have some Chest scans and blood tests to get through this January, but I know even if they do not go as well as expected, I’m still in great care and prepared for whatever comes.

I cannot say thank you enough. There are a number of things that I’ve learned in the last few months, but probably the biggest lesson I learned is how important it is to give others a helping hand when they are going through the same thing you have. I won’t forget that this time, I promise. Thanks.

To lend a hand and perhaps make a difference in one life can make the whole journey worth while.

      Hello from Downingtown!

      Rob,
I am also being treated by Dr. Vaughn at HUP- I am in the middle of 4xEP. Had my RPLND at Sloan by Dr. Sheinfeld.
Anyway, there are a few others on this site that live here in Chester County- I have well water, do you think that's it??
Just kidding- but wanted to say that your post was very touching, and I feel the same as you do. I intend to be an active part of Vaughn's Living Well After Cancer program, and reach out to others when I can.
Keep posting, your attitude is contagious!

Details on the 2007 LIVESTRONG Challenge series will be available by February. You can get onto the list to be notified at this link, and you can count on my talking it up soon. As dadmo said, it's a very rewarding experience.

The LAF ride wont be my biggest, first or most important fund raising event but without question it will be my most rewarding. Just to see so many survivors telling cancer to "go to hell" is amazing.

Good luck, Joe, as you finish up treatment.

You can start slow with the cycling, and there are a range of distances to choose from: 10, 40, 70, and 100 miles. Aim for 40?

                        40 Miles??

I don't know Scott- I'll do my best. I have an exercise bike- so I will train. I just hope the course doesn't include the Manayunk Wall- that's scary stuff here in Pilly.

Anyway, thanks for your well wishes on the chemo this week, I'll take it!

There were some challenging climbs last year, but the Manayunk Wall was not one of them. You'll find the 2006 route maps still at this link.

                            Joe:
I know 40 miles sounds like a lot but with some training you should be ok. I never rode until my son got sick and after a few months of work 40 miles became quite managable. Remember it's not a race.

Thanks Dadmo, now I've got my Wife, Brother, and Brother-in law excited about joining the ride as well!
Right now I have to focus on recovering from this last week of chemo, then I'll start riding my Pro-Form stationary bike again.
I might then reach out to you guys for info on a reasonable priced street bike and what gear I will need.
                              Thanks again for the encouragement.
