Originally posted by Sans rt1I started by lifting weights, but found I was not losing weight. I was firming up, but not losing fat. So, started doing some aerobic exercise (mostly rowing or stair machines) and weight started coming off. Then I decided to reducing my carb intake (I am a bread/potato/carb junkie), and the combination really got the weight coming off. I think that the aerobic exercise raises your metabolism in addition to burning off the calories through exercise. But, lifting weights does help firm you up and redistribute the weight where you want it, so I like doing both.
Plus, for me, another huge benefit is that I no longer get indigestion - before got it nearly every night. But now that I am limiting carbs it almost never happens (and I still eat carbs, but try to keep it to small portions - not the mass quantities like before - and I really don't miss them).

Carbs is what makes me gain weight to which causes depression when get out of shape.Im a compulsive eater when I get nervous and anxious. One thing I don't understand even though I am low on Testosterone9normal level's) I really never lost much strength from age 30 to age 37 now.I just worry about high cholesterol, heart health and osteoporosis.I don't worry about the cancer anymore.

Originally posted by Sans rt1I packed on some weight after CT. As a result, my cholesterol went up from where it had been hovering for years around 170 to right at 200. But over the past 6 months have been exercising and watching my diet, and have lost over 40 pounds. Funny thing is my total cholesterol number did not really change - still at 200, but my "good" cholesterol has increased sharply, and the "bad" cholesterol is way down. My GP tells me that eventhough the total number is still 200, it is a healthy combination - and proof that losing weight and exercise works.
I can't say whether chemo affects your cholesterol (I had RT), but I can say that losing weight and exercise could definitely help.

Just a few days ago I had a CT scan of the liver because of elevated liver enzymes. (man did I miss the sweet taste of the barum. Yum) Seems the medication I have been on is causing this but they wanted to take a look to be sure all is ok. We know this because when I am off the medication the levels come down to normal or almost normal levels. I will be doing some more reading when I get some time.
