Earlier research involving suppressing Testosterone as a birth control measure did not work. Perhaps this is why DMPA is being added.

There is a professor in Sydney who is doing trials on this with T pellets, I think its a good option for short term male birth control although I dont see why DMPA is neccesary.

T Gel plus DMPA is a Promising Male Contraceptive

Interesting article in Nov. 2006 Endocrine News. Paraphrasing, it says a team of scientists hypothesized that testosterone transdermal gel (T gel) could be combined with a depot formulation of depomedroxy-progesterone acetate (DMPA) to conveniently, rapidly, and reversibly suppress spermatogenesis. To test their hypothesis they randomized 44 healthy men aged 18-55 to a 24 week treatment regiment of T gel plus DMPA and found that all experienced dramatic spermatogenesis suppression, and 90% of the subjects became severely oligospermic. This rate is comparable to implantable and injectable testosterone/progestin combinations. No serious adverse events and only minimal changes in weight, serum lipds and PSA occurred. The scientists conclude that T gel plus DMPA is a promising new male contraception regimen. It will be interesting to find out how many guys would be willing to take this stuff. Dianne
