  • My upcoming stem cell transplant

Well, I had my consulation at Jewish in Cincinnatti. I have a tumor wrapped around my spinal cord T5 area causing numbmess in my hands/legs. Its not going into the cord (thank god) just pressing against it! I was treated with 4 x EP finishing up in february, AFP normal until about 6 weeks later it went to 22. Did five days of (in patient)chemo last week to relieve the pain in my back (Ifosfamide, one day of cisplatin, one day of vinblastine) No big deal. Radiation I will continue..no surgery they said it works really well againts the type/location of the tumor. I will have tandem stem cell transplant eventually, which isn't as horrible as the process use to be. This is the only tumor ever found during my entire TC experience. Only concern is about me is that my AFP 6 weeks after chemo. . they are thinking cisplatin refractory which worries me too, but high dose of etoposide/carbo platin is standard. I kinda wonder about the spot on my spine being there for quite some time though, maybe the whole reason for this "recurrence"

My police department just held a benefit all weekend and have many more benefits planned. I'm really impressed how well I'm liked after only being on the department for 7 months!! Well i'm weak bad. .i think this radiation is doing it although its a painless process to go through!!!!!!!!

    December 07 AFP = 3.3
    December 07 CT = Clear!

I'm glad to hear that you're hanging in there. I would consider the fact that they found just the one tumor to be positive news. I hope they knock the h*ll out of that tumor and get you back up and around soon.

That's fantastic that your department is being so supportive. I like to see that my faith in humanity well deserved.

Take care of yourself, you're in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the transplant goes well.

I can only echo the comments and thoughts of Fish. I know doing more chemo must be difficult, but do what has to be done and I know you'll blast that monster away.

I think between radiation and chemo they will kill that tumor. Wonderful about your support. See, you mean a lot to a lot of people. Looks like you turned the corner and got that fighting spirit back. Keep posting on your progress. Dianne

Hey scott, thanks for the email! I lost my password on here and have been busy in Cincinnati, but i'm back online!

This past friday I had a neostar catheter placed, and began neupogen injections, and today was my first day of stem cell collections. I go back on Tuesday (hopefully I will have enough collected and will have Wednesday off). Thursday I have a pre admission teaching day and also meet up with the doctor before being admitted this Friday at 9am for High Dose Etoposide and Carboplatin (apparently an "updated" version of cisplatin). my pet scan came back good - the tumor on the spine appears much smaller and no other areas of metastasis appear!! Although My AFP a few weeks ago came back over 600, we think it was much higher BEFORE i was admitted to the hospital weeks ago for chemo/radiation. So there was likely a favorable response to the previous treatment.
