AFP - Back in range!!!!!

I just got my results today from my monthly blood work - my AFP has dropped to 4.9!!! I'm so relieved.

The past tests (about 3 months apart) kept showing a rise until it had gotten out of range, and then its finally dropped back into range. I was really dreading the prospect of chemo.

The tests since RPLDN went to 3.9 -> 4.6 -> 5.7 -> 6.9 and then finally last month it dropped to 6.4 (still out of range) and then finally 4.9. Its been a real roller coaster emotionally.

I check on here every few days and see the struggles and victories of everyone who has gone through this. I can't say how much its meant to me know there are others out there went through this too, although sometimes I feel like I got away easy with just an Orch and RPLND. Take care, & keep fighting!

And lest we forget: even when things look just splendid, there is always a possibility of recurrence, possibly in the other testicle for example... so I keep my hopes up for you, and meanwhile I hope all of us cherish the days we have without illness.

For me, this is stating to become a real kick in the butt about the fact that we're not getting younger, that life is short, and that we have to be sure to live at our best every day, to love our fellow beings (animals and plants inclued), and ... oh well, you know... all that good stuff.

Certainly one of the biggest fears cancer survivors have is the possibility of recurrence. Cancer in the remaining testicle, though, is practically always a new, second cancer, not a recurrence of the first.

Is it fairly rare to have cancer occur in the remaining testicle...thanks..Mary Ellen

Yes, it's rare... Probably around a 3% chance.

Yet - it happens. And, we never dreamed that in a million years it would. My son Joe (rasjoe) experienced a new cancer in his remaining testicle in July this year, 5 years after his initial diagnosis. He had the second I/O, is on hormonal therapy, and on surveillence. A lesson to be learned is that you remember to do your self-exams and don't miss a follow-up appointment. Take care ... Nancy (Joe's Mom)

My AFP was elevated ,at some point, to 5.9. The latest lesults [25-08-2006] are : HCG=0.1 ; AFP=3.4
I was scarred too
