  • Post Stem Cell Transplant Update

Well as you know I had to have a tandem stem cell transplant this summer and finished up at the begining of September at the Jewish Hosptial in Cincy. My AFP two weeks before starting the second transplant was 15. . down from nearly 600 (due to a tumor compressing my spinal cord - radiation was killing it while at 600 -causing a possible surge of AFP). I go tomorrow to get the results of my AFP, BHCG, CT and Pet Scans. I know for a fact my BHCG will be normal as I have never had elevated BHCG. Doctor told me he would be surprised if anything comes back on the scans as I had very little activity on the pre-admission scans.

Overall I'm glad this summer is over. Jewish Hospital was great in Cincy. .Dr. Broun apparently did research years ago with Einhorn and he follows the same transplant protocol as Indiana University.
    Diagnosed August 2005
    R/O August 2005 AFP 210

    4xEP beginning December 2005
    End Feb/March 2006 AFP 4.6
April 2006 AFP 22 and rising

    Tandem Stem Cell Transplant 7/06 - 9/06
    December 07 AFP = 3.3
    December 07 CT = Clear!

    15+ months remission

Really great to here everything went well during the stem cell transplant. It sounds a pretty grim couple of months, but you've battled through it now. Best of luck with the results tomorrow.

        tccancercop:
Congratulations on getting that out of the way. If I were you I'd be glad summer was over to. But next year you can make up for some lost time. After my son was cured (I love saying that) Nancy and I did a reevaluation of our lives and we are living fuller lives now then ever. Sometimes you can turn lemons into lemonade.
Son Jason diagnosed 4/30/04, stage III. Right I/O 4/30/04. Graduated College 5/13/04. 4XEP 6/7/04 - 8/13/04. Full open RPLND 10/13/04. All Clear since.

Treated by Dr. Rakowski of Midland Park, NJ. Visited Sloan Kettering for protocol advice. RPLND done at Sloan Kettering.
