  • second opinions

I know the procedure is probably different with different doctors, but what have y'all gone through in getting references to treatment centers. Ive also been reading about having a case report sent to a treatment center for evaluation. Im also wondering what the process is for getting medical records, what records are more important to get copies of and what arent?

    Cameron:
Your doctor should be willing to help you get a second opinion. Just let him/her know that you would feel better having your case reviewed by another oncologist. Don't be shy about using indiana or sloan for a second opinion, just bring in the contact information so you local onc can give them a call. This may seem overly simple but that's all it took for my son to get a second opinion. The doctor will know what you need but it will be copies of all your blood work, scans and x-rays. Remember as a patient you have a right to that information.
Son Jason diagnosed 4/30/04, stage III. Right I/O 4/30/04. Graduated College 5/13/04. 4XEP 6/7/04 - 8/13/04. Full open RPLND 10/13/04. All Clear since.

Treated by Dr. Rakowski of Midland Park, NJ. Visited Sloan Kettering for protocol advice. RPLND done at Sloan Kettering.

      Cameron,
take dadmo's advice, it is an easy process and you have the right. We asked our doctor to refer us to both Sloan and Indiana. They both reviewed the case and we ended up at Indiana for treatment.

my boyfriend had a left I/O almost two weeks ago and it was found to be stage 1, seminoma.....he went to the doctor today to figure out a treatment gameplan and he left me a message (since i've been working all day) saying he's going for a second opinion at sloan -- didnt say any other details than that and i can't reach him right now to find out more.....should i be worried about him wanting a second opinion, or is it more likely that he just wants to be safe rather than sorry?

You should congratulate him for taking control of the situation. Testicular cancer is very curable if the right steps are taken, if for some reason your local oncologist makes a mistake it could cost your boyfriend his life. Sloan Kettering is recognized as one of the centers of excellence when it comes to treating testicular cancer.

Seeing as though he got diagnosed with stage 1 seminoma, its most likely he is trying to be safe then sorry.
