  • Scans now show something, tumor markers do not

Well my doctor showed me something on my 8th rib on the left side of my back. My tumor markers are all still normal, but my guess its new cancer that doesn't give off "tumor markers" He said teratoma but i don't think so. I may have to have a small section of the rib in that spot taken out. I will look Wed for sure to see if it is any bigger between the last few months scans. What do you think??

I hate to have people do multiple scans...and I also hate having to wait...but with no markers, will they wait and redo the scan...

I just recall einhorn telling me that people occasionally have sought a 2nd opinion from him when the scan shows something...and they see something different or nothing at all...

On my initial scan the pathology called out a possible cancerous spot on the liver....and einhorn and others said it is nothing...but it had me scared when I read the initial report.

I am not sure how it works when there is a spot on a rib, but my husband had enlarged lymph nodes and no elevated tumor markers, when they had been elevated pre orchiectemy.

Eventually they did a PET scan to confirm the active cancer.

So I am all for suggesting PET scans to rule out teratoma, because teratoma will not light up on a PET scan.

      Hope everything turns out well.

Is is possible that it could be an old injury? On the bone or the muscle layer? I agree with Pete that unless it's really obvious that it's something to worry about you should have a second read on the films before you have surgery. Let us know what you hear Wednesday.

I agree with Adrian- you may want to ask your dctor if your are a canidate for biopsy.
Why would you think your doctor would be wrong about teratoma?
Did you have teratoma in your original tumor?- If it's there, it's needs to come out.
              Good luck,
              Joe
