Hi everyone, I am still at the hospital with Anthony so I can't have time to respond to everyones posts other than to let you know how much I appreciate all of you, your blessings and just knowing you're there.

Anthony did indeed get very sick, severe pain and vomiting. Everything was ok on the scans they did other than they said there was fullness that indicated everything he drank was backing up. He stopped drinking and never made it to the food before he got sick. Thankfully that has all passed and today other than normal pain from the surgery he is doing much better.

He started drinking again and his nurse brought him jello (which he hates) to try.

He is back up walking all over the place and is smiling more.

We do not have any information about the pathology, and no markers have been done. Im pretty anxious to see his AFP, but scared to see it too. I pray to God that it's back to normal, or heading that way.

They havent said this, but I think that if he manages with the fluids and soft foods today, maybe they will have him eat solid food for breakfast in the morning and then send him home. My guess, since they were going to send him home wednesday before he got sick. We shall see.

When I get home and get settled back in, I will read more posts and take the time to respond to everyone. But just know that I appreciate all of you.

Great news, sounds like you on your way out and up! I had an odd experience with Russell. I thought that when he was discharged he would be so glad to be at the door and feeling the fresh air. Instead he had a fear reaction. He identified that it was uncomfortable to leave the security of the doctors and the nurses. He did just fine, it is just mind boggling how many twists and turns can happen. Take care, Russell's Mom, Sharon

It is great to hear from you, and it's even better to hear that Anthony is on the mend. I particularly liked the fact that he is "walking all over the place and smiling more." Waiting for results always sucks, but you should have resolution on that soon. Try to keep your spirits up; I bet you Anthony smiling is doing just that .

You know, actually I was concerned that he was offered something to drink so soon after surgery. Every doctor is different, but a more conservative approach...which is brutal because I know how thristy he must have felt...may have prevented some of this. I had to wait 6 days before a sip of water. But hopefully it has passed now. I am glad the worst is behind all of you. We have not stopped thinking of you both.

I think all of us who have been down the Sheinfeld route are amazed when other are getting food and water in just 3-4 days when our guys rule is nothing by mouth for 5-7 days. Jason was a full week with nothing but ice chips. Apple juice was allowed on the morning of day 8 and jello for lunch.

I have never in my life been around such an ultra conservative doctor but the hospital said they had never once had anyone get sick post surgery because he was so strict. Of course at the time...he seemed like a big meanie for not letting Boyce have anything. I kept saying "BUT he HAS bowel sounds " and he kept saying "maybe tomorrow margaret "

This past weekend, my Sheinfeld-trained urologist fraternity brother came by to visit me last week before he making his move to Dallas. He said that now that he's done with his residency at Sloan and New York Presbyterian, he is going to do a fellowship in robotic/automated/laparoscopic surgery to learn how to make improvements in all of the invasive procedures common to urologic surgery. He said that while he worked under Sheinfeld, he learned tons; but he did reiterate that Sheinfeld is a purist (some call this kind of doc a "dinosaur"), and he doesn't believe in newer methods. Irrespective of this, Sheinfeld really knows his stuff, and he's "all that and a bag of chips" despite the conservatism.

My friend just finished writing a book chapter he co-authored with Sheinfeld on post-chemo RPLND, so if any of you went under the knife with Sheinfeld post-chemo, chances are your case was reviewed in this manuscript. I will try to get a hold of it, and barring any copyright issues, I'll post it in the reference section of the Forum.

I had a Sheinfeld "Fellow", I think his name was Dr. Nash.
Young, good looking tan guy, always needed a shave.
He told me he gets all of his training through Gray's Anatomy and Scrubs, this stint with Sheinfeld is just required review!

As far as eating or drinking, I was not permitted anything, not even ice chips, for 5 days. When Dr. Sheinfeld told me that I could order breakfast- I ordered all the 5 grams of fat on the menu.
Then I took two bites and that was all I could fit!

Going back to the food after surgery. From my nursing experience, many people tolerate food post-op, but whenever the bowel is involved, it stops working for a while. If you introduce food and it is not moving along, it can be torture for the patient. The nausea and vomiting can be ruthless and then comes the naso-gastric tube. So very uncomfortable to be vomiting after an abdominal surgery. I tend toward the cautious side..Russell's Mom, Sharon
