  • Facial Numbness

A few days ago I started experiencing some facial numbness. It's above my left upper lip, up into my cheek and temple. Unfortunately, everything I've read about it indicates bad, bad things (metastatic cancer, stroke, paraneoplastic syndrome, to name a few). Has anyone experienced this. It's very slight, almost imperceptible, but scary
Detected mass 10-6-06, Radical left I/O 10-10-06, Stage I seminoma, 1.5 cm primary, No LV invasion, No Rete Testis Invasion... Currently on Surveillance.

    djmac,
Instead of reading about it and fearing the worst, please give your doc a call and check it out. Numbness should not be ignored....

        Hi Djmac.
Does the side of your face seem to droop a bit? like pausly?
I would run it by my doctor's office. Don't scare yourself, just find out what it is and deal with the here and the now, like you always do.

I experienced something similar once called bells palsy. I was unable to move the whole left side of my face. Thought I may have had a stroke. Turned out that its not that serious. Here is a link to some info. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/bells/bells.htm

But above all pay a visit to a doctor.

Did it happen after an intense workout? I've had that happen after making a strenuous jog or just overexerting myself at the gym.

              Gum Infection?

I was just examining my teeth. My left lower gum and the adjacent cheek seemed inflamed (especially the cheek.) I flossed between two rear molars and started bleeding... a lot, with ***** stuff coming out! The one molar is mostly filling and looks awful. The other is behind it, and behind that is my left lower wisdom tooth (I never had them out).

Maybe I should be running to my dentist instead of my oncologist?

PS Yes fed, I have been working out!

It seems reasonable that the remnants of your wisdom tooth could be responsible for the numbness, especially if they are impacted (but only a dentist would be able to tell). I mentioned the workout thing because the facial numbness has happened to me in the past, and when it does, it usually occurs immediately after the intense workout. Just a thought.

                  djmac,
Given what you said about your tooth I'd get to a dentist ASAP and my bet is the numbness is related to the tooth. If youhave an infection like that you need it treated immediately. Good luck!

It's done, I'm seeing the dentist tomorrow. I also called the onco. She told me to give the dentist a chance to find something. If not, then give it a few more days and to call her if it doesn't resolve on its own. She said she's not overly worried about it.

Good! I'm betting it will go away shortly after your infected tooth is taken care of. Let us know how it goes!
