Post Orchiectomy Scar Treatments?

Hi everyone. This probably sounds vain but shortly after my Orchiectomy (13 July) I've been rubbing in Mederma to minimize my 3 inch Orchiectomy scar. My MD suggested this. I've also heard of Silicone sheeting and Vit E and all sorts of other stuff. Can anyone tell their opinion on these options and also I'm curious how Mederma works?

After my Orchiectomy I did not put anything on the car and after about 6 months it is mostly all faded now.

After my RPLND surgery I knew the scar would be a lot bigger so I've been trying this Vitamin E cream that you just rub on. It really helped heal the scar faster, in terms of fading it or reducing the bump of it I don't really think it does much but it did help it heal faster initially.

Hi JamesC: Mederma (at around $20 per tube) is supposed to be one of the best ointments to MINIMIZE the appearance of scars...made of plant extracts and all that good stuff...keep in mind that you have to be very committed to applying it numerous times a day in order for it to take its full effect. I used it for a dog bite scar (yeah, neighbor's dog bit me a while back...and I'm the biggest dog-lover there ever lived so that was disappointing!!!) and it appears to have worked for the most part. It's used a lot for stretch marks and is recommended commonly for pregnant women (so my sister says who's a nurse).

What scar? Ray's is not visable at all and he did not use any topicals. Not to worry JamesC, try the vitE and give it a little time and soon you 'll say "what scar?" too.

The Strange Things that Bother Us????

I have two large scars on my knees from multiple surgeries. A huge scar on the back of my upper thigh from surgery from a spider bite. A scar on my cheek and chin from when I was a kid. My groin looks like a boating accident from hernia repair, left i/o and an implant. All of them, no problem. I have seven tattoos and am planning a rather large piece to be done soon. Gotta love them skin cartoons. What drives me crazy are the 5 tattooed dots from radiation. I just have issues with them. I have no explanation, but until I change them into some other skin art ideas, I just won't be content. Go figure???

Vit E doesnt work externally, I would take it as a suppliment along with vitamin C.

Payback!! I had work done on a scar by a plastic surgeon....he said that massage was one of the best things to do for a scar. Increases the circulation, softens the tissue and allows growth. Sharon

A big thank you to everyone for the ideas. This Mederma stuff seems to be working ok, I really appreciate the Massage idea. That seems to be helping a lot. The inguinal incision seems to be really stiff and the more I've rubbed the more normal it feels.

I'm feeling really good now. My new "appliance" is feeling comfortable and I'm no longer temped to sleep with a pillow between my knees or get out of bed like I'm 100 years old.

I know my wife would never comment on my scar but... She also said she didn't care about my implant but since I got one she did admit "wow!" which did wonders for my ego...

3 inches- wow. Tims is 5 inches (I just measured)and 16 months after his surgery still totally visable. I wonder why his scar is so long? Hmmm.... We did not use any scar creams though.

I don't know if this makes a difference but I suspect Tim had more to take out. My teste had atrophied. Or it could just be the technique the surgeon used?

Good point- I have to admit though, I was shocked how big his scar was at the time of his surgery. His scar is as long as some C-section scars. I wonder if his surgeon was jsut beign cautious. Interesting, though. I wonder if it had to do with the size of the testicle/tumor or not???
