  • RPLND over...

    Hi everyone -

Here I am on the fifth floor (ahhh, some of you know it so well...) of Sloan w. my complimentary cranberry juice. Rob had a six hour surgery yesterday. His left kidney was removed. The tumor was stuck up under his pancreas, encroacing on his mezza cava (large intestine?) and Shein thought he'd have to remove some colon as well, and called in a specialist. The specialist said all was viable, they scraped his colon and left it alone. Shein said he was very pleased with the way the surgery went. Rob was on a ventilator until 11 p.m. last night (out of surgery at 2:40 p.m.). He's on Dalaudid (sp) Zantac and Reglen. Not sure what the antibiotic is. Thanks to Dadmo for telling me about the bar over the bed, it is an actual lifesaver. Thanks to Margaret and Boyce for mentioning the cold washcloths on the head... it is making him feel so much better! And Dadmo, we are keeping the catheter low to the ground. They wanted him up and walking less than 24 hours after surgery - he was able to do 1.5 laps. He's in miserable pain, as I am sure all of you NDers were, and we expect tomorrow to be a better day.

Thanks for all the shoulders to lean on and the support you're giving us.

One thing - Sheinfeld mentioned that there was necrotic tissue, but not how much. Would it be normal for the tissue to have been live tissue? He's sent a "frozen section" - I don't know what that is - to pathology but we won't get answers for ten days or so. Does this mean there could be some live non-sem? I'm not sure if we're going to see Motzer, so I don't know who to direct my questions to yet.

    Thanks, thanks, and more thanks.

Glad it is over, Stace, and he is on his way to recovery. My father lived until he was 80 with one kidney so don't let that be a concern. Hopefully, it will all be necrotic tissue..hang in there. Dianne

                  Stacy:
Dr. Sheinfeld only finding necrotic tissue is great news. It's unfortunate that a kidney had to come out but you guy's may be done with all treatments. Of course you need the full pathology report to be sure but the frozen section is a great indicator. If you don't mind could you send me a PM with your room number? Nancy and I may have a chance to be in the city and I would love to meet with you guys. We saved some party gifts just for you .

                      Hey Stacy,
Great to hear that Rob is on the mend. To answer your question, a "frozen section" is a quick-and-dirty way to find out what's in a tumor section taken immediately after resection. Based on what Dr. Sheinfeld said, the tumor section showed necrotic tissue, meaning it's dead stuff (presumably killed by the chemo). The results are a good start, but a frozen section only gives you preliminary data, hence the need for paraffin sections and the delay to get the full pathologic assessment. Rest assured that the pathologist that Dr. Sheinfeld uses is one of the best in the field (I used him as my second opinion), so the resected nodes are in good hands. In the meantime, the focus should be on Rob's recovery... yes there is more waiting, but I bet the recovery from such a major surgery will keep you guys busy enough. Take care, and give Rob our best,

We were also told 10 days for the path results but in actuality it was 7. You will certainly have some happy tears when that report comes in with your very first "all clear".
