Congrats on the "all clear". The Relay for Life is very emotional during the candle lighting.

Hi Kendall: Glad to see you're doing well...sorry that I have no pearls of wisdom to offer on your question but I just wanted to say "hi". Have a great time tonight...I'm sure it will be very powerful and moving.

            Hi:

I've been treated for peripheral neuropathy not related to TC, but caused by degenerative disk disease, mostly sciatic pain. I've tried nortriptyline, gabapentin, cymbalta, and lyrica. I can't really say if any have helped; they've all caused side effects that forced me to stop taking them within a week of beginning treatment. They ranged from drowsiness/dizziness to feeling too wired. But these meds are really varaible from person to person, and I don't tolerate most meds very well. The doctor told me he has 70 year old patients taking 5x the dose of gabapentin that I could not tolerate. So keep trying, hopefully you'll find something that will help.

            Mark:
I hope the cymbalta helps, that problably gave me the least side effects of anything that I tried.

BTW: I find it interesting that the doc would tell you that lyrica would not work if he thinks gabapentin will. Both drugs bind to the same subunit of voltage-dependant calcium channels in the central nervous system.

            Mmmmmm is right!!!

tell me more about cymbalta.....forgot to mention while at indy i had a chance to talk to dr. einhorn in july 11 about gabapentin. he said i will know in a day or two if it will help, otherwise it wont. the damage will take nothing but time if it comes back at all. will try and go to 4x aday next week or two, if that doesnt help it looks like im sol. will just have to deal with it.
              thanks for the input

Cymbalta is an anti-depressant with neuropathy indications as well. So far, the pain is lessened, but not gone, and I'm a bit tired. Still a work in progress. Hopefully everything will stabilize.

                  Kendall:

Cymbalta (duloxetine HCl) is a potent inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake by nerve endings. It also inhibits dopamine reuptake, but not as strongly.

While classified as an antidepressant, clinical trials showed that it was effective in treating peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients, which is why doctors have been trying it for peripheral neuropathy related to other causes (disk problems and chemo side effects), however, I don’t think there have been any clinical trials for neuropathy caused by back problems or chemo.

If you go to www.rxlist.com and type in cymbalta, you can get the detailed info.

It might be worth considering if gabapentin doesn’t work. For me it made me feel too wired, (probably from the inhibition of norepi reuptake) so I had to stop.

                  Best wishes.
