  • AFP question

HI all. I have a nagging issue, which may be nothing to worry about, but I cant get it out of my mind. I had a lump, had my ultrasound and then IO in 8/05. My AFP pre surgery was 12.3. Post surgery it was the same.
Pathology came back as a Sertoli Cell tumor even though it was negative for inhibin, which from what I have read is an indicator of Sertoli. My urologist said that there is no further tx, but sent me to oncologist to be safe. Well, my AFP has been going up although slowly. It was 13.5 in 9/05 and last month it was 14.4. My oncologist ordered PET scan and it was all negative as have been CT scans thus far.
Anybody have any ideas on this. My onco said that it was nothing to worry about as long as it is not shooting up high, but it just seems to me that something is wrong. I know liver issues can also cause AFP rise, but this does not seem likely. I had negative Hepatitis screen, I am not much of a drinker. No other liver enzymes were up either. If anybody has any ideas about this, please let me know. Thanks.

    Hi ramfan.
Sorry, I can't offer anything else than my sympathy.
I think it sounds strange but you have had all the right scans, it seems, so maybe it's just your normal AFP level?

Keep your doc on his toes though.

    Best wishes

      thanks

Thanks for your help. I am still nervous about. I really have not felt good lately. It just seems that there would be some reason for it going up. Anybody else have any ideas.

When is your next blood test? The rise so far really isn't large enough to be sure it's anything more than normal variation in test results.

          Hi Ramfan

Sorry to hear about your nagging AFP issues. I can relate to what your are going through. Mine fluctuated from 16 pre I/O,down to 12,and then up to 18 where it was pre chemo. Not to say that yours is elevated due to mets. My last C/T scan showed a 2.2 c/m node which brought on chemo, My understanding is that the mets "warning bells" go off with an AFP of 25 .

          Best wishes
